The MTV Unplugged performance aired on Decembefore Kurt’s death and a live album was released posthumously a year after the performance was filmed. Sadly, Kurt Cobain died less than a year later in Seattle on Apfrom what the police controversially deemed as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The landmark concert is one the band’s most famous performances. ![]() In November 1993, Nirvana would perform for MTV Unplugged in New York City. But it was the lead single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” from their 1991 album, Nevermind - the first with new drummer Dave Grohl - that propelled Nirvana and Cobain to commercial superstardom, ironically the very thing Kurt railed against in many of his songs.
